Qumranet Solid Ice is a different solution from most of the products we have reviewed in this category. Rather than allowing you to access an existing computer remotely, it provides users with multiple virtual desktops which can be used as a standalone computer would be. The system is really suited to businesses who want to centralize control of their IT systems and provide their staff with a remote working solution.
Home users will not really be able to benefit from the features Qumranet Solid Ice offers and so would be better looking at some of the products in our top ten. Even businesses looking for a remote access solution may not appreciate the full benefit of Solid Ice if they are looking for a simple solution. This system requires a degree of technical knowledge and some expensive hardware to set up, but, once running, it could save in IT support and hardware costs indefinitely.
The way Qumranet Solid Ice works is to allow users access to virtual desktops through a web browser. This is different from most solutions because the desktop they are accessing is not that of a single PC, but virtual desktops created and controlled by a dedicated server. When a user logs in, the server creates a new instance of a Linux or Windows desktop and allows the user to operate it as if they were directly using the computer in front of them. This means that all the computing power requirements can be handled by the server and so the terminal the user is accessing from does not have to be very powerful.
The virtual desktop server can be maintained using the provided software tool which scales to handling thousands of desktops. An administrator has the power to set up different users with access to different programs and maintain their network drive space. This means that any support problems can be dealt with centrally, reducing the need for support staff to carry out site visits.
There are two protocol options for use with Qumranet Solid Ice. Both are reasonably secure and can be relied on for most common tasks. Users must also authenticate themselves with the virtual desktop server before they are allowed access to a desktop.
Qumranet Solid Ice is a fairly complex solution for most businesses, but could end up saving money in the long run. If you are looking for a more simple remote access solution we have reviewed many other products which would be more suitable. However, if you think Solid Ice would suit your business Qumranet require that you get in touch with your local representative for a detailed quote and analysis.
