Remote Desktop Control is a fairly basic, but effective remote access tool. It allows you to connect to a remote PC and take full control as if you were sitting in front of it. The software is aimed more at the home market, but it would work just as well in a business environment and big discounts are available for bulk purchases.
Remote Desktop Control is a simple application to set up and use and there are two editions to choose from depending on what your specific requirements are. These don't differ in functionality, but rather one only allows direct connections where you know the target computer's IP address and the other routes connections through a dedicated server so that you don't have to know. The latter is ideal if the target computer is behind a firewall or uses a dynamic IP address because the server in the middle maintains a connection at all times and takes the hassle out of getting connected.
Whichever way you choose to connect the functionality is the same. Remote Desktop Control allows you to connect to the target PC and do everything on it as if you were directly in front of it. You can also easily transfer files between the local and remote PC using a very simple interface. Other than this there are no extra features included in the software which lets it down slightly. Other similar products tend to include an integrated chat feature or the ability to hear the sound from the remote PC. However, the basic functionality works well and we had no problems with it.
Security is adequately catered for in Remote Desktop Control. Unauthorised access is prevented with a username and password unique to each remote computer and proven encryption algorithms are used to secure communications between computers. It is also possible to lock out a remote user instantly and log any activity on the PC being controlled.
In all Remote Desktop Control is not a bad application, but, in our opinion, is not the best out there. However, if you need to control a large number of computers there are some excellent discounts for bulk purchases, but you should be aware that if you go for the online gateway edition you have to pay an annual fee to use the gateway. A free trial is also available so it's worth giving it a try to make your own mind up about Remote Desktop Control.
