Editor's Verdict:

Skyfex is a simple remote access tool designed to let experts provide support over the internet. It isn’t the most fully featured application available, but gets the job done and is priced fairly reasonably. A free version is also available, but this limits the remote control time to only 5 minutes so most users will probably want to upgrade at some point to the pro version.

Although the sales blurb tries to pitch Skyfex as a remote support solution for providing product support across the web, in reality it just has the same features as most other remote access tools. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, depending on how you plan on using the service. It is easy to take control of a remote computer and operate it as if you were sitting in front of it. You can also transfer files between computers and share the clipboards to easily copy and paste text. Finally, there is an integrated text chat facility which lets you communicate with anyone using the remote computer.

It is easy to get started with Skyfex and neither party has to download any software. The service works as a plug-in to Internet Explorer which is automatically downloaded when you give permission. Unfortunately that means that you can only access computers running Windows and using Internet Explorer. Many other services provide cross platform functionality – or at least support for different browsers. However, it does work from behind firewalls and routers so there is no need to change your existing network settings.

For security Skyfex gives you a username and password to access your account on the website. Users who want to grant you access must then log into the site and request assistance before you can select their computer and control it. Any communications between computers are encrypted with SSL technology, which should be enough to keep most data safe.

Skyfex is a fairly average remote access service, which aims itself at the support market, but does not provide any of the features which usually go into a remote support solution. As a basic remote access service it works reasonably well, but still lacks a few of the extra features some other services provide. For a comparison we recommend having a look at some of the highly rated products in our top ten list.
