RemotePC is a remote access tool developed by the same company who provides the popular and respected IDrive online backup service. The tool is very well designed and easy to use, but perhaps lacks a few of the features its competitors have. Options are available for home users, small businesses and people who need to provide online helpdesk support.
At its core RemotePC is a basic remote access tool which lets you take control of a remote PC and control it as if you were in front of it. You can access all the files and applications on the computer using a web browser or desktop client which relays a view of the remote computer's desktop to your screen. This functionality works well and access is very fast and responsive due to the latency reduction techniques used in the software. However, there are none of the additional features that some of RemotePC's competitors include in their software to enable you to communicate with someone on the remote PC or do demonstrations via a remote desktop.
The set up process for RemotePc is very simple and even novice computer users should manage it with no problems. The software gets round any firewall or IP address issues by using a server in the middle to negotiate remote desktop connections. This means you have to pay an annual subscription fee to use the service, but it takes the hassle out of trying to configure firewalls and routers to accept the incoming connections. A nice feature is that you can even reboot the remote computer and you will automatically be reconnected when it starts back up.
Security is well covered with RemotePC and both the home and business editions use the same strategy. Users must first authenticate themselves with a username and password before being allowed access to any computer, and, once connected, all communications are encrypted using a 128-bit algorithm. This should be plenty of security for most people's requirements, but there are solutions which can offer slightly more.
RemotePC is a good choice for home users who need an easy to set up remote access solution. Business users though, may appreciate a more enterprise level solution which provides more functionality and logging features. However, the small business plans do offer decent value for money when compared with some other solutions so are worth a look if you think you won't need any of the extra features other products offer.
